Men's Soccer: Maryland vs. North Carolina

Friday, September 25, 2009

Where: Ludwig Field, College Park.

When: 8 p.m. TV: Fox Soccer Channel.

Tickets: $8 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors, no charge for students. Gates open at 6:30. Seating capacity is 7,000.

Records: Terrapins 4-1-1, 1-0-1 ACC; Tar Heels 5-0-1, 2-0.

Outlook: In a rematch of last year's NCAA championship game won by the Terrapins, eighth-ranked Maryland looks to extend its unbeaten streak to six since a season-opening loss to UCLA. The only blemish for the second-ranked Tar Heels was a 1-1 tie with Northern Illinois. Maryland is 7-0-1 in the past eight games of the series, including three one-goal victories last year. The Tar Heels haven't won in College Park in nine years. Perhaps looking ahead to this meeting, each team had unexpectedly difficult midweek matches: Maryland missed many quality scoring chances in a 1-0 victory over St. Peter's and North Carolina had to overcome an early deficit to defeat East Tennessee State, 2-1, in overtime. The Tar Heels, making their first road trip of the year after three exhibitions and six regular season games in Chapel Hill, lead the ACC in goals with 16, while the Terrapins are third with 13. Maryland F Jason Herrick is tied for the conference lead in goals with four and MF Matt Kassel is tied for first in assists with five. MF Michael Farfan and F Cameron Brown have three goals apiece for the Tar Heels.
