GETTING THERE

Stratton Mountain Resort is less than two hours from Albany and less than three hours from Boston. Fall flights to Boston start at $99 round trip on AirTran, departing from BWI Marshall, and $125 on American Airlines from Reagan National. Air from BWI to Albany on US Airways starts at $180. The resort is on Stratton Mountain Road.

WHERE TO STAY

Inn at Stratton Mountain, 61 Middle Ridge Rd., Stratton Mountain, 800-787-2886, http://www.stratton.com. A quick walk from the gondola and base area shops and restaurants. Rooms start at $69 a night. The inn also offers a leaf-peeper package ($85) through Oct. 11; deal includes one night's lodging and two gondola tickets.

WHERE TO EAT

Bentley's, Inn at Stratton Mountain. Hearty American cuisine, such as steak and roasted potatoes, served in a lodgelike setting. Entrees $14-$23.

GONDOLA RIDING

Base area of Stratton Mountain Resort. Closes Oct. 12. Cost: $15 for unlimited rides. Ask the hotel or gondola staff for hiking routes, including the one to the Fire Tower.
