They're piled high at farmers markets, pressed into ciders and featured at festivals this season. Here's a bushel of ideas for your dose of an apple a day.
When Chef Eric Ziebold of the Mandarin Oriental's CityZen restaurant told our colleague Tom Sietsema that the fried apple pie being served at the hotel's new restaurant, Sou'Wester, was like "McDonald's [apple pie] on steroids," we knew we had to check it out. For starters, the dessert looks a lot more appetizing than those paper-wrapped bricks from the golden arches. The taste is even better: Buttery diced apples are enveloped by a half-moon of fried pie dough that is somehow, miraculously, still light and flaky. The dish includes a scoop of vanilla ice cream; at $5, it's a steal.
