On Park View's second offensive play in Friday night's AA Dulles District matchup with Broad Run, senior quarterback Brandon Lee called for the snap and handed the ball to running back Daryus Beale. A sea of maroon-and-gold jerseys swarmed the senior tailback before he could turn his head upfield, and the play resulted in a four-yard loss.
That was the recurring theme of Park View's offense during the first quarter as the Spartans' defensive line blunted play after play before it had a chance to develop.
The fourth-ranked Spartans held the visiting Patriots to 10 net yards in the first quarter and used two touchdowns in the opening six minutes to roll to a 52-22 victory against their biggest rival.
"We just fly to the ball and love getting back there and making plays," senior defensive lineman Frank Foreman said. "We wanted to make them beat us throwing the ball, and that meant we had to get off the ball as fast as we could and get in the backfield."
Broad Run (5-0) raced to an early lead on Joey Quigg's 11-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 63-yard opening drive. Three plays later, the Patriots fumbled a handoff, and the Spartans recovered in the end zone to make the score 14-0.
The Spartans' offense kept clicking in the second quarter, scoring four times with three receiving touchdowns from senior wideout Adrian Flemming on passes of 30, 15 and 20 yards. Flemming's final touchdown -- a screen pass over the middle thrown by sophomore quarterback Connor Jessop -- came with just more than 11 seconds remaining in the first half and gave the defending AA Division 4 state champions a 39-7 lead at the break.
Jessop completed 5 of 6 pass attempts for 96 yards and three scores, and senior running back T.J. Peeler rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The Patriots (2-2) managed 85 yards in the first half and committed 10 penalties on the night.
"We have all these weapons, and now we have a guy in Connor that can get them the ball," Broad Run Coach Michael Burnett said. "If he can continue to do that, then we probably have even more weapons than we had last year. T.J. and Connor make the offense click, and that's what's exciting."
No. 4 Broad Run 52, Park View 22 Wardrobe Malfunction: T.J. Peeler started the game wearing his usual No. 1 jersey but had to switch to No. 13 after his first jersey was torn on a tackle. The switch didn't hamper his play as he reeled off 170 of his yards with the new number. 25 and Counting: With the win, the Spartans have won 25 consecutive regular season games. Their last loss came in the first round of the 2007 regional playoffs against the Patriots.
