CRIME

Man Shot by Police Still Critical

A 31-year-old Germantown man remained in critical condition Tuesday after he was shot four times Monday by a Montgomery County police officer who defended himself after the man attacked him outside a house in Darnestown, police said.

No weapon linked to the shooting victim has been recovered, a police spokeswoman said. Detectives continue to investigate the incident.

About 3:40 p.m. Monday, police received a report of a suspicious situation in the 14000 block of Indian Run Drive. A homeowner, concerned about a dark-colored sedan coming up his long private driveway, had gone out to confront the driver, Ingham "Andre" DeFreitas.

DeFreitas tried to turn his 2000 Cadillac Catera around, but it got stuck on wet grass, police said. Officer Kurt Colson, a two-year veteran of the department, arrived and approached him on foot, police said. The driver "charged and then attacked" the officer, witnesses at the scene later told detectives, according to police.

Police Identify Body Behind Church

Prince George's County police have released the name of a man who was found dead behind a Landover Hills area church early Monday, officials said Tuesday.

Police said Pedro Nelson Sanchez-Bautista, 43, of the 7700 block of Frederick Road in Landover Hills was found naked in a parking lot behind the Ascension Lutheran Church. Authorities classified the case as a homicide but have not released a cause of death.
