A Prince George's County police officer shot and wounded a suspect in a stolen sport-utility vehicle whose driver was trying to ram another officer Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. near White Pearl Place and Pepper Mill Drive in the Seat Pleasant area, police said. That's where police were called for the report of a suspicious vehicle, said Officer Evan Baxter, a Prince George's police spokesman.

The SUV, which had been reported stolen a week earlier, sped at an officer approaching it, prompting another officer to fire at it, Baxter said. The gunfire struck one of the occupants in the arm, he said.

At least two people, including the person who was shot, bailed out of the vehicle and led officers on a brief foot chase, Baxter said. Officers eventually apprehended both suspects after calling for a helicopter and a canine unit to assist in the search, he said. Baxter said investigators believe a third person might have also run from the SUV. That person has not been found.

Baxter declined to identify any of those involved in the incident.

The person who was shot was hospitalized but is expected to live, Baxter said. He said the officer who approached the SUV was also injured and hospitalized.

Police recovered a handgun from inside the SUV, Baxter said.
