The off-duty Prince George's County police officer shot in the hand Wednesday night was released from the hospital Thursday, police said.

The officer, who police have not identified, was just arriving home when two masked men approached his car, and one pulled a handgun, authorities said.

What happened next remains unclear, but it has the makings of a classic carjacking gone bad. The officer and the suspect exchanged gunfire, and the officer was struck in the hand. Both suspects ran off while residents in the area called 911, authorities said.

The incident occurred in the 7200 block of Jaywick Avenue in Fort Washington sometime before 10 p.m., police said. The suspects remain at large, and it is unclear whether either was shot.

Officer Evan Baxter, a Prince George's County police spokesman, said internal affairs investigators are exploring the circumstances of what happened, but "for all the world, it looks like it was a clean shooting."

The incident was the second police-involved shooting in Prince George's County in as many days. On Tuesday, an officer shot and wounded a person in a vehicle whose driver tried to ram another officer with an SUV, police said.

Authorities on Wednesday identified the officer who fired his weapon as Anwar Mirza, a five-year member of the department assigned to the bureau of patrol. Mirza has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation, police said.
