A Fairfax County man who claimed he was stabbed inside Springfield Mall Tuesday night has now been arrested for lying to the police, who said Thursday that the man's injuries were self-inflicted.
Fairfax police said Anthony Chedid, 21, of the 6400 block of Franconia Court, reported that he was approached by two men he didn't know about 9:20 p.m. as he sat on a bench in a mall hallway. Chedid told police that he gave up his wallet when asked, but that one of the men then stabbed him anyway.
Chedid was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The incident appeared to be another violent episode at the troubled mall.
But detectives found "inconsistencies between the alleged victim's account and an examination of the physical evidence at the crime scene," Officer Don Gotthardt said. He said Chedid may have inflicted the wounds due to "personal issues," but declined to elaborate.
Chedid was arrested Thursday and charged with filing a false police report.
