The chief of the Morningside Police Department in Prince George's County was fired this morning following media reports that he was under investigation for selling two weapons.

This Story

David Eichelberger had worked for the town police department for less than a year and had recently been promoted to chief, according to a town Web site and officials. Town Attorney Todd Pounds said the five-member council fired Eichelberger, but he declined to provide details.

ABC 7 has reported that Prince George's authorities raided the Morningside Police Department on Thursday and later searched Eichelberger's home and vehicles. They said authorities were investigating a complaint that Eichelberger sold two weapons -- a handgun and a shotgun -- out of the trunk of his police car for $600. Authorities were investigating whether the alleged sales violated state gun sales laws.

A Prince George's police spokeswoman this morning said she was not aware of the incident.

The town of Morningside, which has about 1,300 residents, is near Andrews Air Force Base.
