NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, announced Friday that it will conduct a training exercise over the region's airspace in the late morning and early afternoon Saturday.
Area residents might hear and see fighter aircraft as they practice identifying and intercepting other aircraft. NORAD spokesman Michael Kucharek said he could not identify the unit involved in the drill because it has not been told. Saturday's activities are part of an Alert Force Evaluation.
"We see how they do things in terms of their response capabilities," Kucharek said. "Even though we want it to be no-notice for the unit, we still have to think about the public."
The defense command, responsible for responding to an attack on the country, aims to do such drills in the region about four times a year, Kucharek said.
