8 p.m., Mendocino Grille, Georgetown

Allison: I took the day off to get ready for this. I went to the gym, then relaxed. I got to the restaurant about five minutes before him and sat down.

Colin: I was a little nervous. So I got there a couple minutes early to settle in. She was already there. The hostess took me back to the table, and we got introduced.

Allison: My tastes have changed since I filled out the application. I have been dating a lot more muscular guys who are really into fitness and going to the gym. He was cute, but he probably wouldn't have struck my eye in the crowd. As soon as I saw him, I didn't feel anything.

Colin: She was classically cute, an all-American girl. She's not outside the type of girl I would normally go for. I could tell she was fit. We started off just talking about all the basics.

Allison: He ordered his beer before I ordered my wine. I really believe in guys being chivalrous. If they are not going to order for you, then they should at least allow you to order first. When the waiter came back to take our [meal] order, I made sure to speak up first.

Colin: She has some sort of wine-tasting promotional job on the weekend. She was talking about what the different wines were and where they were from and what that meant. She had all kinds of random things going on. She recently danced at a [college] bowl game [this year]. She also competes in ice-skating and hula hooping. When we were talking about our families, I was like, "Yeah, my mom works part time with special-ed kids." And then she was like, "I have also worked with special-ed kids."

Allison: He seemed shy and a little bit intimidated. When you meet somebody and you really hit it off, you are laughing and smiling, and that just wasn't happening. He wasn't as outgoing as I would have liked. I was bored.

Colin: I am okay with not dominating the conversation. She seemed interested and engaged, and I was fascinated by all the things she had going. It was like some sort of epic Russian novel -- you can't keep track of all the names because there are so many of them. By the end, I kind of thought that any topic I bring up she is probably involved with in some way.

Allison: He told me a little about the different food items on the menu because I hadn't heard of them before, so that was a nice gesture. I got a gigantic fish with its head still on it. The meal was good. I ordered this 2002 wine and was like: "Oh, it's so good! You should really try it." He said he really didn't drink wine, but he ordered it. I thought that was really nice, because it showed that he was open to trying new things.

Colin: Somewhere between the story of Allison hula-hoop training on the roof of her old apartment and the description of her 5:30 a.m. figure-skating lessons, I realized that she may be a bit more aggressive than my usual dates. I wish I had that kind of energy and stamina.

Allison: He's probably the person in the office who would talk smack about me because I am too outgoing. I was trying to get home [to Maryland] and go to sleep. I was the one who asked for the check. My dad took me [to the restaurant] and picked me up because I don't know how to navigate D.C.

Colin: I said "hi" and shook his hand outside the restaurant. It was very strange. I am a 25-year-old man. Typically when I go on dates, the father isn't involved. She gave me her phone number, and I gave her my phone number. I got in a cab to go back to [Virginia].

Allison: I would give it a 3 [out of 5]. It wasn't horrible, but I really ran the show, and I am looking for somebody who can counterbalance me, and make me laugh more, and really make me admire them. I am not going to pursue a romantic relationship with him, but if he called me up, I would go get lunch with him as friends.

Colin: I give it a 4. It was not like anything I had experienced before. She is super-high-energy. It's just not how people I hang out with are. They are much more laid-back. I don't think it is unlikely that I would get in touch with her, but she is up in Maryland, and with all the stuff she has going on we would definitely have to put some planning into it. I've got graduate school and work, so there is a lot on my plate, too.

UPDATE: Allison and Colin have not been in contact since the date. "I don't think we will be getting back together," Colin tells us.
