A fire in Georgetown Friday afternoon killed an elderly woman, fire officials said.

Authorities had not identified the woman, but believe she owned the home on the 3000 block of O Street NW.

The fire began about 3:50 p.m. and was contained to the first floor. It was quickly extinguished, but when firefighters searched the home, they found the woman's body.

Investigators from the police and fire departments are searching for the cause and origin of the fire. The house had smoke detectors, but it is unclear whether they were working.

There were no problems with water pressure, fire officials said. That had been a problem with previous fires.
