Total number of U.S. military deaths since 2001 and names of the U.S. troops killed recently in the Afghanistan war, as announced by the Pentagon:

Lance Cpl. Jordan L. Chrobot, 24, of Frederick, Md.; 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Killed Sept. 26 in Helmand province.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher D. Shaw, 37, of Markham, Ill.

Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III, 26, of Bethany, Okla.

The two soldiers were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, based at Fort Lewis, Wash. They were killed Sept. 29 on Jolo island, the Philippines.

Staff Sgt. Alex French IV, 31, of Milledgeville, Ga.; 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard, based in Lawrenceville. Killed Sept. 30 in Khost.

Spec. Russell S. Hercules Jr., 22, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based at Fort Campbell, Ky. Killed Oct. 1 in Wardak province.

Sgt. Ryan C. Adams, 26, of Rhinelander, Wis.; 951st Engineer Company (Sapper), Wisconsin Army National Guard, based in Rhinelander. Killed Oct. 2 in Logar province.

All troops were killed in action in Afghanistan unless otherwise indicated.

Total fatalities include one civilian employee of the Defense Department. They also include service members killed in other locations involved in Operation Enduring Freedom, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Pakistan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; Uzbekistan; and Yemen.
