A 46-year-old Crofton man was sentenced Thursday to two months in jail and three years of supervised release for stealing $36,000 from his former employer, the American Red Cross.
Mark Gibbons, a former executive assistant at the nonprofit, stole the money by submitting 21 false travel vouchers during a two-year period ending in April 2008, according to court papers filed by federal prosecutor Daniel S. Friedman.
Friedman wrote that Gibbons submitted the fraudulent travel vouchers to supervisors and later received reimbursement for unapproved trips, portions of trips, as well as food and lodging for himself, his wife and daughter.
Gibbons started working for the Red Cross in January 2006 and was fired in April of last year. He pleaded guilty to fraud in June.
U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle also ordered Gibbons to pay $36,495 in restitution to the nonprofit group.
