Gaithersburg Assistant City Manager Fred Felton has retired, city officials said Thursday, two weeks after he was accused of accidentally discharging a handgun inside his apartment, sending a round through a wall and almost hitting his neighbor.
"I have truly enjoyed my service to the city of Gaithersburg and enjoyed working with the outstanding staff, elected officials and the public," Felton said in a statement.
His boss, City Manager Angel L. Jones, said she accepted his retirement, effective Wednesday.
"While the details of this action will not be disclosed because it is an internal personnel matter, I feel that Mr. Felton's retirement is in the best interest of the city," Jones said in a statement. "We thank Mr. Felton for his 20 years of service to this community, and wish him luck in future endeavors."
Felton is due in Montgomery County District Court on Nov. 9 on charges of reckless endangerment and discharging a gun in an urban area. In the past he has said he was glad no one was hurt but declined further comment.
