A 17-year-old girl apparently caught in a crossfire between a security guard and at least one masked gunman died Friday in a hospital, D.C. police said.

The victim, Kenyetta D. Nicholson-Stanley of the 300 block of Bryant Street NE, was shot in the head Thursday night during an exchange of gunfire between a guard at the Edgewood Terrace housing complex and possibly two masked assailants, police said. The incident occurred about 8:20 p.m. in front of a building in the 500 block of Edgewood Street NE.

The girl apparently had been talking with the guard before the shooting began, police said. It remained unclear Friday who fired the fatal shot.

She was taken to Washington Hospital Center in critical condition and pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m. Friday, police said. Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
