Former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta says he has been contacted by the Houston Astros about their managerial opening.
"To interview with the Astros is very exciting," Acta told Houston television station KRIV on Friday.
Acta did not say when he would be meeting with club officials. He was fired by the Nationals during the season.
Astros General Manager Ed Wade said the club would announce each of the team's candidates for manager 24 hours prior to their interviews.
The Astros finished 74-88 in 2009. They fired Cecil Cooper on Sept. 21 and promoted third base coach Dave Clark to run the team over the final two weeks. Clark is a candidate for the manager's job.
More Surgery Unlikely
For all the surprise developments in Alex Rodriguez's year, this one should please the Yankees: The third baseman likely won't need further hip surgery after the season.
When Rodriguez underwent arthroscopic surgery in March to repair torn cartilage in his right hip, his doctor suggested that a second, more extensive surgery would be necessary after the season. But on Friday, orthopedic hip surgeon Marc Philippon said that Rodriguez's hip has healed better than anticipated and will continue to improve without a further procedure.
"I need a little more tests, but so far I don't think he will need surgery," Philippon said. "I wouldn't say I'm surprised because you are dealing with a world-class athlete with extreme discipline."
Posada Sits at Start
After a day of deliberation, New York Manager Joe Girardi -- who had already committed to use José Molina, not Jorge Posada, at catcher for Game 2 -- elected to stick Posada on the bench altogether to begin the game.
Girardi was debating the idea of using Posada as the designated hitter, but the skipper stuck with Hideki Matsui, who has filled the role for most of the season.
Posada replaced Molina in the sixth inning.
Pedro Gets the Call
Pedro Martínez is getting the ball in another big game.
Philadelphia Manager Charlie Manuel chose the 37-year-old right-hander over J.A. Happ and Joe Blanton, who made cameo appearances out of the bullpen Thursday, to face the Colorado Rockies in Game 3 of their series Saturday night.
The best-of-five series is tied at one game. Martínez is 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA in the postseason.
