The Washington Redskins lost to the Detroit Lions [front page, Sept. 28], and The Post acted as if the Earth had stopped spinning. On the other hand, a midweek Washington Nationals home season finale that did not interfere with precious Redskins game coverage was relegated to Page D7 [Sports, Oct. 1].
The game, and the home season, ended with a grand slam by a rookie outfielder and should have been on the front of the Sports section. Of further note was that the outfielder, Justin Maxwell, is a University of Maryland product.
Opening Day is six months away. I look forward to improvements from both The Post and the Nationals, but I hesitate to hold my breath for either.

On Oct. 2, Chico Harlan wrote that "the home team played its first meaningless game of the year," in reference to the Atlanta Braves having been eliminated from making the playoffs. With that as a criterion, presumably the Nationals have been playing "meaningless" games practically all year.
