President Wayne Cooper told the Charles County commissioners at a regular meeting last week that he was disappointed in the county's progress toward more affordable and workforce housing initiatives.
More than two years ago, the commissioners made a 10-goal plan of action to encourage more housing that's affordable for low-income residents and county employees.
"I would like to have all 10 items completed by the end of our term. I guess I was looking for a little more progress," Cooper said in an interview. "What can we do to move this [along], because we would like it to be finished before the end of our term," which ends in about one year.
The county has defined the criteria for applicants to be eligible for affordable and workforce housing and has created a housing authority with the ability to build affordable projects. But the county has yet to finalize a proposal to create a mandatory program or change architectural design requirements and sewer policies to make it easier to build affordable housing.

Route 246 will remain open to traffic throughout construction, with temporary lane closures.
