D.C. police are investigating a shooting in connection with an armed robbery at a store in the 5000 block of Rock Creek Church Rd. in Northeast.

D.C. Police Sgt. Chris Moore said that a man approached a woman to rob her inside Price's Grocery just after 3 p.m.

A 21-year-old man working behind plexiglass opened his locked door to help her, and the assailant shot him in the stomach, police said.

The suspect ran a few blocks and carjacked a vehicle on Crittenden Street.

Commander Melvin Scott said the suspect, speeding away, struck another car on 16th St. NW. Police located the vehicle, but the suspect got away.

The victim, identified by family members as Clinton Price, is in stable condition. Police said he was in surgery.

Chris Faison, 36, lives nearby and was headed to the market about an hour after the incident. He said the victim often works behind the counter, and it didn't surprise him that Price put himself at risk to help the woman.

"He boxes," Faison said. "He's a real good kid."
