A young man was shot and wounded Sunday evening by assailants reported to be on bicycles on a street about a mile from the U.S. Capitol, D. C. police said.

The shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. in the 800 block of 10th Street NE, a residential street which is just north of H Street NE, and just beyond the northern edge of Capitol Hill.

The victim was described as about 18 or 19 years old. Details of his condition were not immediately available but he appeared to be conscious after being hit.

He was not identified immediately, but police said a preliminary investigation indicated that he was not a resident of the area. No motive was known for the shooting.

In the initial report of the attack, police were told that it was carried out by two people on bicycles.
