A 13-year-old Maryland youth was killed Sunday when he was struck by a Washington-bound Amtrak train as he returned home from play, authorities said.
Shawn L. Kelly of Elkton, in the northeastern part of the state, was killed about 5:20 p.m. Sunday as he and two friends were returning to their homes after playing in a wooded area about one half mile away, Maryland state police said. The other two had crossed the tracks when the youth was hit, the police said.
An Amtrak spokeswoman said the top speed on that section of track is 130 mph. She said she was not certain how fast the train was going, but it was probably moving "at a pretty good clip."
She said the Boston-to-Washington Acela train was carrying 183 passengers at the time of the incident.
