A 34-year-old man who was walking his dogs was shot and wounded during a robbery attempt Monday evening in Montgomery County, and a District man was arrested in connection with the incident after a pursuit and search, county police said.

The victim was apparently hit in an arm and not severely wounded in the shooting, which occurred about 5:45 p.m. in the 4100 block of Peppertree Lane, which is close to Connecticut Avenue in the Aspen Hill area of the county.

According to the police account, a vehicle with five people inside stopped near the victim and two men got out. Police said they demanded his property and began running their hands over his pockets. Then, police said, one of the men shot him.

After the shot was fired, the robbers fled, and the victim went to his home and called police. Officers obtained a description and a few minutes later, they stopped a vehicle four or five miles away, on Georgia Avenue south of Randolph Road, police said.

One man ran from the scene carrying a handgun and officers cordoned off an area near Georgia Avenue and Shorefield Road, police said.

They said Bernard F. Byrd, 22, whom they listed as living in the 1300 block of Spring Street NW in Washington, was later arrested in the vicinity. He was charged with attempted murder and attempted robbery, police said. They said a handgun was found nearby.
