Fla.'s Wexler Quitting For Mideast Center

Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.) is quitting Congress to head a think tank seeking peace in the Middle East, he told party leaders Tuesday night.

Wexler, in his seventh term, told the lawmakers that he will become director of the Washington-based Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. A public announcement is expected Wednesday morning in Florida.

In 2007, when most of the Florida political establishment was aligned with then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Wexler was one of the earliest and highest-profile supporters of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Wexler emphatically vouched for Obama's candidacy in Jewish communities across the country.

Florida law requires Gov. Charlie Crist (R) to call a special election to fill an open House seat.
