The International Monetary Fund economist shot last week as he arrived at his Bethesda home continues to improve in a hospital, and police are seeking information about a dark-colored vehicle with no lights on that was seen in his neighborhood at the time of the shooting, officials said Wednesday.

Police say Ashoka Mody, 54, has now spoken with detectives. The case is no longer being handled by homicide investigators, an indication of how his health is improving.

"He is expected to recover," a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Detectives at the site of the shooting in the 6800 block of Millwood Road found no evidence of a robbery last Thursday. But they continue to explore motives, including robbery, the spokeswoman said.

Mody was shot while in his minivan after he had pulled into his garage. The assailant fired at least one round, and was last seen running from the residence toward Goldsboro Road in dark clothing and a mask, police said.

Police ask anyone who might have seen the vehicle or who knows anything about the case to call 301-657-0112.
