John George Collias Diplomatic Courier
John George Collias, 83, an Alexandria resident and retired diplomatic courier for the State Department, died Oct. 6 at Capital Hospice in Falls Church. The cause of death was listed as failure to thrive.
Mr. Collias was a diplomatic courier from 1950 until his retirement in 1986. In 1956, he helped evacuate the American Embassy in Cairo during the Suez Crisis.
He was born in Fall River, Mass., served in the Navy during World War II and received a bachelor's degree in economics from Brown University in 1950. He was a lifelong tennis player.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Marcolina Collias of Alexandria; a daughter from a previous relationship, Claudia Betzner of Buseck, Germany; and a brother.
