Prince George's County police officers fatally shot a man Sunday who called 911 while he was inside a College Park 7-Eleven and told a dispatcher: "I'm not coming out alive. Police need to do their job," authorities said.
The man, who had said he was robbing the convenience store, eventually emerged from the building shirtless and wielding two knives, police said. He lunged at a canine officer standing next to the door, according to police and a witness. They said the officer's dog jumped at the man, but he kept coming, and other officers opened fire.
"They were yelling at him, "Drop the knife! Drop the knife!'" said the witness, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Maurice, to protect his privacy.
The incident, which occurred just before 3 p.m. in the 8600 block of Baltimore Avenue, marks the third police-involved shooting in or near College Park in recent days. In separate incidents on Friday, police officers shot a man who barricaded himself in a home after trying to rob an armored car, and an officer shot two men dressed as women who police said dragged an officer in a car after shoplifting.
It was believed at first that the two who were shot were women. But they "turned out to be males dressed in female clothing," Officer Henry Tippett, a county police spokesman, said Sunday. Police later said the suspects were not in disguise.
The driver of the car, a 23-year-old Baltimore man, remains hospitalized in critical condition. He will be charged with second degree assault and theft, police said. His passenger, a 22-year-old District man, was released from the hospital. He, too, will be charged with theft. The 32-year-old District man who allegedly tried to rob the armored car remains hospitalized in fair condition.
Sunday's incident began when an employee of the 7-Eleven called 911 to say a knife-wielding man had entered the store. Soon after, the man announced a robbery, someone triggered an alarm and the man placed his own phone call to 911, police said.
Employees were inside during the incident, authorities said, though none was hurt. The 3-year-old police dog, Riki, that tried to disarm the man was shot in a leg. Police also declined to identify the deceased man or say how many officers fired how many shots.
