One man was shot to death and another critically injured early this morning during an altercation outside an apartment building in Southeast Washington, police said.

The flurry of gunshots was reported just before 2:30 a.m. at the Benning Heights Apartments, in the 4800 block of G Street SE at the intersection with Benning Road.

D.C. police Capt. Michael Farish said one man was found with multiple gunshot wounds near the parking area of the apartment building, which runs alongside Benning Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 50 yards away, on the opposite side of the building, police located a second man who had also been shot several times, Farish said. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition but was expected to live.

"Our understanding is that there was some type of dispute," Farish said. "We don't know over what at this time."

Police are working to confirm the dead man's identity and notify his next of kin.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call D.C. police at 202-727-9099.
