Prince George's County police have identified the man whom officers shot and killed Sunday outside a College Park convenience store after, authorities said, he lunged at an officer wielding two knives.

Police identified the man Wednesday as Matthew Maurer Obst, 55, of the 7500 block of Spring Lake Drive in Bethesda.

Officers were called to the 7-Eleven store in the 8600 block of Baltimore Avenue about 3 p.m. Sunday after an employee called 911 and said a man with a knife had entered the store.

Moments later, the man announced a robbery and someone triggered an alarm. Then, police said, Obst called 911 himself.

While on the phone, authorities said, Obst told a dispatcher: "I'm not coming out alive. Police need to do their job."

Police identified the officers involved as Jonathan Eyler, Michael Gainey, Osiris Lopez, Bryan Hodor, Anton Washington and Iris Borrero. The officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while the incident in investigated, officials said.
