Art: Ofrenda: Art for the dead
In Mexico, the biggest celebration this weekend isn't Halloween -- it's the day after. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a centuries-old holiday that honors dearly departed relatives.
And in Alexandria, the holiday is celebrated Saturday with a parade through the center of Old Town, a masked ball, live music and plenty of art at the Torpedo Factory.
Throughout the day, artists will discuss Mexican art and lead craft demonstrations (suitable for all ages). There will be an altar where, in keeping with tradition, visitors can leave mementos for their ancestors.
The biggest draw, though, should be the costumed parade, which begins at Market Square on King Street at 7 p.m. and then winds through Old Town's streets to the Torpedo Factory, led by traditional drummers. Everyone is welcome to jump in, or just watch from the sidewalks.
After the parade, there's a free masked ball (with a cash bar) with swing and rock bands, plus belly dancers and trapeze performers.
Saturday 3 p.m.-midnight. Torpedo Factory, 105 N. Union St., Alexandria. 703-838-4565. http:/
