Another big speedskating day for Hedrick
Even without Shani Davis to push him, Chad Hedrick claimed another event at the U.S. speedskating trials on Sunday in Milwaukee.
Hedrick made a surprise appearance in the second round of the 1,000 meters and wound up with a spot on the World Cup team after the fourth-fastest time overall, 1 minute 10.38 seconds.
Davis, the world-record holder in the 1,000, had already put up a time Thursday that he knew would be fastest (1:08.85) and didn't bother taking part in the second-chance race. The best time from the two rounds was used to determine the five members of the World Cup team.
Joining Davis and Hedrick on the World Cup team are Nick Pearson (1:09.65), Trevor Mariscano (1:09.74) and Jonathan Kuck (1:10.82).
Later Sunday, Davis skated to an easy victory in the 10,000-meter race.
The Olympic squad will be determined by the results of five World Cup events.
Jilleanne Rookard was a surprising star of the trials. She completed a sweep of the long-distance races, adding the 5,000 title to her victory in the 3,000, and qualified for five events overall, including pursuit.
SOCCER
Jeff Larentowicz scored in the 79th minute to secure a playoff spot for the New England Revolution with a 1-0 win over the host Columbus Crew.
The victory in the final game of the MLS regular season gave New England (11-10-9) 42 points and a playoff berth at the expense of the Colorado Rapids, who fell from the ranks of the eight teams to qualify. . . .
In Carson, Calif., the Houston Dynamo scored two goals in a three-minute span midway through the first half, then held off Chivas USA, 3-2, to finish second in the Western Conference.
Houston (13-8-9) had 48 points along with Los Angeles, which held the tiebreaker over the Dynamo for the top spot in the conference. The Dynamo will play the expansion Seattle Sounders in the first round.
Chivas USA (13-11-6) dropped to fourth in the West with 45 points and will play arch-rival Los Angeles at the Home Depot Center in the postseason for the first time.
