HIGHLIGHTS
"The Botany of Desire" (WETA and MPT at 8 p.m.) chronicles the evolutions of the apple, the potato, marijuana and the tulip, which created a craze in the 1600s.
Replacing an episode of "Hank" -- though the Kelsey Grammer sitcom returns with new episodes next week -- the classic "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (ABC at 8) features Charlie Brown scoring an invite to a Halloween party.
"Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space" (NBC at 8) checks back in with the cast of this year's "Monsters vs. Aliens" movie, including the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie, as the aliens hide inside jack-o'-lanterns and try to take over Susan's town.
When you get kicked out of your house, what better place to go than Maui? The lucky models travel to Hawaii and go through a surf challenge, and supermodel Kirsty Hume guest-judges on "America's Next Top Model" (CW at 8).
Manny chooses a wild outfit for the first day of school, which sparks a fight between Jay and Gloria on "Modern Family" (ABC at 9), and Mitchell and Cameron panic when their baby daughter has her first bump on the head.
Though it won't air on NBC until next year, a revamped "Friday Night Lights" (DirecTV at 9) kicks off Season 4 with drama on and off the football field.
Jules insists it's time to break up with Josh once he tells her he's in love on "Cougar Town" (ABC at 9:30), and Ellie and Laurie help her find the best way to dump him, albeit nicely.
The contestants cook a TV dinner on "Top Chef: Las Vegas" (Bravo at 10) and later try to impress actress Natalie Portman during a fancy meal at a Sin City restaurant.
"The Jay Leno Show" (NBC at 10) has talk-show host Chelsea Handler, and Jay asks Brian Williams 10 questions.
Actor Patrick Dempsey and Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig are guests on "Late Show With David Letterman" (CBS at 11:35), and Sting performs.
Actor Chris O'Donnell stops by "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" (NBC at 11:35), along with downhill skier Lindsey Vonn and singer Uncle Kracker.
