These projects aren't in my budget. What can I do?

If you can't afford to buy energy-efficient systems and materials for your home, here are some quick fixes you can make to lower your utility bills this winter:

-- Seal air leaks around windows and doors with sealant, caulking and weather-stripping.

-- Have your heating system inspected by a qualified professional to ensure it is working properly.

-- Check the furnace filter monthly, and change it if it appears dirty.

-- Install a programmable thermostat.

-- Open curtains on west- and south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Close them at night to lessen heat loss.
