Largo man charged with killing witness in case against him

A 31-year-old Largo man has been charged with killing a witness against him in a federal drug case.

Weldon Gordon was indicted last week by a federal grand jury in the District for allegedly conspiring to obstruct justice by killing a 32-year-old DEA informant on Nov. 1. The informant, Andre Hayes, had played a key role in helping federal agents arrest Gordon on drug distribution charges last year, prosecutors have said.

Gordon is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in the District's federal court.

The charge carries the potential death sentence. Gordon's attorney, Harry Tun, did not respond to a phone message seeking comment Wednesday afternoon.

Federal prosecutors have said that Gordon and his girlfriend, Tiffany Reaves, 30, plotted to kill Hayes after they learned he was a witness in Gordon's drug case. Reaves was indicted on the same charges in June. She has pleaded not guilty.

Hayes, who was arrested in January 2007 on federal drug charges, acted as an undercover informant as part of a cooperation deal with the government, prosecutors have said.

He purchased more than 150 grams of crack cocaine from Gordon three times starting in September 2007, authorities have said.

Gordon was arrested in September 2008 on drug charges tied to those sales. About a month later, Hayes was found fatally shot in a driveway in Upper Marlboro. Prosecutors have strongly implied at court hearings that Gordon fired the fatal shots.

The indictment does not say who actually pulled the trigger but alleges that "a member of the conspiracy shot and killed" Hayes.

Prosecutors have said that Reaves seduced Hayes in dozens of telephone calls and text messages in the weeks leading up to his death. She then lured him to the suburban house where he was shot, they say.

The house is owned by Gordon's mother and stepfather, and Gordon once lived there, authorities have said.
