A high school student who was struck by a Ford Explorer outside her school in Potomac Thursday morning was cited for walking in front of the SUV in an accident that sent her to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Montgomery County police and paramedics.

The accident occurred about 7 a.m. in front of Winston Churchill High School, police said, apparently just after the student, 16, had been dropped off by a parent.

An initial investigation showed that she crossed Gainsborough Road outside a crosswalk, according to police. The Explorer, driven by a 20-year-old man, struck her in what paramedics called a "low-speed impact" collision.

The driver stayed at the scene and is not believed to be at fault, a county police spokeswoman said.

The victim told paramedics she had pain in her right leg and hip area, said Capt. Oscar Garcia, a fire department spokesman.

Accompanied by her mother, the student was taken to Suburban Hospital, according to a statement released by the Churchill principal's office.
