Shirley Adelstein, 25, is a PhD candidate and research assistant at Georgetown University. Josh Sanderlin, 28, is a lobbyist and law school student. They live in the District.

Wedding date: Oct. 11

Location: Sixth & I Historic Synagogue; Sewall-Belmont House and Museum

Guests: 90

How they met: Shirley and Josh were both 2004 summer interns at the U.S. Senate. They worked in offices down the hall from each other and had met once briefly at a dorm where they stayed. Then one day Josh recognized Shirley on a Metro escalator. She didn't remember his name and tried to steal a glance at his ID badge. They dated the rest of their time in D.C. but went long-distance for two years before returning to the area.

The proposal: The couple had tickets to the Obama inauguration, and Josh was inexplicably upset when Shirley agreed to let one of her friends tag along. Much went wrong that day: The three never made it to their seats, nor could they get onto the Mall or into a hotel lobby to watch. Josh had planned to propose in the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden, but by that time Shirley was bawling on a bench about their failed plans. He decided to go for it anyway. Needless to say, her mood changed.

The wedding: Shirley and Josh walked down the aisle together to convey their dedication to an equal partnership. Her grandfather officiated. The reception site is adjacent to the Hart Senate Office Building, where they interned.

Honeymoon: A short post-wedding jaunt to New York; possible trip to North Africa next summer.
