Pr. George's says housing funds secure

Prince George's County officials said Friday that they have met a deadline for earmarking more than $5 million in federal housing grants before losing the funds.

The money is from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's HOME Investment Partnerships Program, known as HOME, which gives states and localities funding each year for affordable housing development. The grants come with a 24-month commitment deadline.

Prince George's had to get agreements on projects that would use $5.17 million in federal money and send information on the deals to HUD by the end of the month. If it hadn't, HUD would have been required to reclaim and redistribute the funds, federal officials said.

James E. Johnson, acting head of the county Department of Housing and Community Development, said Friday that the county had secured several projects and updated a HUD database with the required information. "We made the deadline," he said.

HUD officials said they are working to confirm the deals and that no funds would be reclaimed in the meantime. HUD received assurances from the county that $5.2 million had been earmarked and that the county was in the process of committing $1.7 million more, HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan said.

Unidentified man dies in fall from roof

An unidentified man fell from a roof in New Carollton on Friday and died, authorities said.

He was found at a home in the 6600 block of Chestnut Avenue about 2:30 p.m., and the incident is under investigation, they said.
