As a Washington area debt collector, I read with interest Michelle Singletary's Oct. 29 column on debt collection ["Calling the debt collectors on abuse"] and the need to update the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Ms. Singletary missed the mark in her piece in telling readers that the subject of the Government Accountability Office's recent report on credit card debt was my industry's "dreadful players." Actually, the GAO's report was all about the pressing need to update a woefully out-of-date law so the members of my industry can do our jobs better and stay in compliance.

The vast majority of debt collectors are ethical and do our best to treat consumers with respect as we handle necessary business transactions.
