A Fort Washington woman was killed Monday after she was struck by a sport-utility vehicle backing up in the parking lot of a Prince George's County shopping center, police said.

About 1:30 p.m., rescue crews were dispatched to the parking lot of the Vista Gardens Marketplace shopping center near Annapolis Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Glenn Dale after a woman was reported trapped under a vehicle. They arrived to find Karen Prince, 55, underneath a Ford Expedition in front of the Shoppers Food Warehouse. She was not breathing and had no pulse, authorities said.

Firefighters removed Prince and took her to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV was taken to a hospital for observation, fire officials said.

It is not clear how fast the SUV was backing up or why its driver did not see Prince. Police said that no charges have been filed and that the crash is under investigation.
