A CHILD'S VIEW
Addressing big questions
"NANA, WHAT'S CANCER?"
(AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, $14.95)
This children's book, written by Beverlye Hyman Fead and 11-year-old granddaughter Tessa Mae Hamermesh deals with cancer from a child's perspective. In each of the 12 chapters, Tessa asks her grandmother a question, such as "Why are some cancers worse than others?" and "Do children get cancer, too?" The conversation is real: Hamermesh has lost three grandparents to cancer, and in 2002, Fead was given a cancer diagnosis, which she still lives with. The book is a helpful vehicle to get parents or grandparents to talk to their kids about the medical and emotional aspects of cancer. It ends with a three-page glossary of cancer-related terms. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
