A man who apparently hopped a freight train to come to the Washington area several days ago , was killed by a train after leaving a Halloween concert in Northern Virginia, according to accounts from police and others.

Bradley Schmidt, 20, of Roanoke, Va., was found dead about 11 a.m. Sunday on the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks in Manassas, the Manassas police said.

A police spokesman said that Schmidt and two others had apparently come to this area from Roanoke by climbing onto a Norfolk Southern freight.

The spokesman said Schmidt apparently left the Halloween event on Stonewall Road alone late Saturday and was struck some time afterward.

Schmidt had apparently gone to a convenience store across the tracks from the Stonewall Road address, according to Keith Charlton, who lives at the site, which he said includes a venue for bands to play.

He said Schmidt and the two others arrived in the Manassas area some time last week, and intended to keep traveling.

"It was very tragic," Charlton said. "We're still trying to get over it."
