Holmgren 'bothered' by treatment of Zorn
Perhaps Mike Holmgren might not want to coach the Redskins after all.
He sure didn't sound like a guy trying to impress owner Daniel Snyder when he blasted Washington management Monday for its treatment of Coach Jim Zorn, one of Holmgren's former assistants, during an interview with a Chicago radio station.
Asked what he thought about the Redskins' decision to strip Zorn, Holmgren's quarterbacks coach with the Seattle Seahawks, of play-calling duties, the longtime head coach "thought it was very unfair to put him in the position," he told the "The Waddle and Silvy Show" on ESPN Chicago.
"The position they put Jim in, it shouldn't happen. You can be upset with me as a play-caller or how the team's going, [then] fire me. But don't do that. Don't pull the rug out from under me, tie my hands, make me look foolish . . . take away what I came there to do in the first place. Don't do that."
Holmgren, who stepped down as Seahawks coach after last season, reportedly at least once has said he would enjoy coaching on the East Coast after stints in the Midwest directing the Green Bay Packers and on the West Coast in Seattle. He is believed to be among the candidates Snyder would seek to interview if he fired Zorn.
"That bothered me a lot," Holmgren said. "Jim Zorn is one of the nice people. I'm a nice guy, but I'm not that nice. Jim Zorn is really a nice man. What they did, I did not like it at all."
Fullback activated
The Redskins signed fullback Eddie Williams, their seventh-round (221st overall) draft choice in April, to the active roster, and added tackle Clint Oldenburg to the practice squad. Oldenburg, a free agent, was a fifth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2007. He also has played for the New York Jets, Denver Broncos, St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings. The spot on the active roster was created when tackle Chris Samuels was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list Saturday.
