NFL wants its rules to supercede laws

The NFL is calling for Congress to enact legislation to ensure that the provisions of its collectively bargained steroid-testing policy take precedence over state laws.

Commissioner Roger Goodell is scheduled to testify Tuesday before the House subcommittee on commerce, trade and consumer protection. The subcommittee is holding a hearing on the case in which the NFL has been unable, because of a series of court rulings, to enforce its four-game suspensions of two Minnesota Vikings players who tested positive last year for a banned substance.

Browns reportedly fire GM

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns apparently have fired General Manager George Kokinis.

Kokinis was escorted from the team's facility Monday by security personnel, the newspaper reported.

The move comes a day after owner Randy Lerner said he wouldn't fire Coach Eric Mangini this season, though the Browns are 1-7, but he does plan to appoint someone at some point to run the franchise's football operations.

"There's absolutely no question about that," Lerner told the newspaper Sunday. "The highest priority that I have is a strong, credible, serious leader within the building to guide decisions in a far more conspicuous, open, transparent way."

Chargers cut Chambers

San Diego released wide receiver Chris Chambers, who was in his 10th season in the league.

Chambers has 482 career catches, but only nine in seven games this season.

Coach Norv Turner said in a statement posted on the Chargers' Web site that the play of other receivers and the team's needs on defense and in the kicking game were behind the move.

Raiders evaluating Cable

The Raiders issued a statement saying they and the NFL "will undertake a serious evaluation" of the latest allegations against Coach Tom Cable.

Two women, a former wife and an ex-girlfriend of Cable, told ESPN that Cable had been physically abusive of them.

Cable denied most of the accusations but acknowledged once striking his former wife with an open hand.

According to the Associated Press, Cable said Monday he expects to remain Oakland's coach.

"I'm coaching the Raiders and I think my future is to be the coach of the Raiders," Cable said, according to the AP.
