An early morning house fire in Rockville on Tuesday killed about 22 parakeets, parrots and finches, according to initial reports from Montgomery County fire officials.

Just before 1:30 a.m., firefighters were told of a possible house fire in the 500 block of Manakee Street, about 10 blocks northwest of downtown Rockville. When they arrived, the saw smoke and fire on the outside of the house, and occupants trying to reenter to save the birds, said a spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters needed 30 minutes to control the blaze, authorities said.

One bird, a parakeet, was found alive, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a spokesman for the county fire service. Five human occupants of the house, at least some of whom tried to reenter the burning structure to rescue the pets, will need temporary living quarters, according to authorities.

The blaze caused an estimated $400,000 in damage. The fire appears to have been caused by an electrical problem.
