A man who was shot and wounded Monday in downtown Silver Spring was attacked as a result of involvement in a possible drug deal and probably not in a random confrontation, Montgomery County police said Tuesday.

In a report released Monday, police said preliminary investigation indicated that the man had left a Gold's Gym before being attacked in the 8600 block of Colesville Road,

However, police said Tuesday that the man, a 25-year-old D.C. resident, was not a gym patron. They said they were investigating whether he knew the two assailants who approached him as he was walking outside the gym. Details of what happened remained unclear, but police said they apparently tried to rob him.

The man was treated at a hospital Monday and released, police said.
