League of Women Voters offers evening with lawmakers

The League of Women Voters of Calvert County will have its annual Legislative Evening with the delegation to Annapolis from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick.

Representatives from community groups will have the chance to speak with state legislators about their priorities for the 2010 General Assembly session. Public comments will be allowed as time permits.

Hoedown coming to St. Mary's fairgrounds

A hoedown from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the main hall of the St. Mary's County Fairgrounds will offer instruction in square dancing, line dancing, the two-step and the waltz.

The Country Memories Band and Ray and Karen Windsor will perform.

Tickets are available for $7 at http://www.hoedownatfairgrounds.com or $10 at the door. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free. The fairgrounds are off Route 5 south of Leonardtown.

Proceeds will help the Community Mediation Center of St. Mary's, which assists Southern Maryland residents, organizations and businesses by providing alternative dispute resolution services.

Army-Navy parade planned for Dec. 11

Patuxent River Naval Air Station's 10th annual Army-Navy parade and pep rally will be Dec. 11 to celebrate the football contest between the Naval Academy Midshipmen and West Point's Black Knights.

This year's parade will begin at 3 p.m., starting at Building 409 at Patuxent River. It will proceed on Cedar Point, Buse and Liljencrantz roads to the Flight Deck Lounge for a post-parade party.

Red Cross billboards become a contest

The Southern Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross is having a contest to see who can find the most billboards displaying Red Cross advertising in the region.

To participate, send a digital picture of the billboard or report the road location along with the location number -- typically six digits on the billboard's frame -- to bobg@somdredcross.org. Entries will be accepted until Nov. 13.

The first person to report a sighting will receive a personal emergency preparedness kit. Everyone who reports a sighting will get a Red Cross utility bag, and the person who reports the most sightings will receive a package of Red Cross gifts. Red Cross employees and immediate family members may not enter.

Winners will be announced Nov. 16 at http://southernmaryland.redcross.org.
