Emergency shelter seeks volunteers and donations
Arlington County's emergency winter homeless shelter is seeking volunteers to help serve meals, monitor the desk and door and distribute bedding. The shelter, which opened Sunday, is seeking donations of blankets, sheets, cereal, hot meals and clothing.
The Arlington Street People's Assistance Network, known as A-SPAN, operates the shelter at 2409 N. 15th St. It can house up to 73 people and is open from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. daily through March 31. People served by the shelter receive a blanket, a sheet, a pillow, a shower, laundry services and a bed or a mat. Dinner and breakfast are served, and case-management services are offered to help people find housing.
Members of Arlington's behavioral health staff will provide mental health and substance abuse counseling. Arlington Employment Center staff members will also meet with shelter clients to help them find jobs.
