No clowning around: Cellphones distract

-- So, do people miss things going on around them when they're talking on cellphones?

According to a new study, 75 percent of people who were walking down the street while using their cellphones missed seeing a clown -- with a red nose and big red shoes -- riding a unicycle near them.

"The interesting thing is they turned back around and they were surprised they missed the unicycling clown," said Ira Hyman, a professor at Western Washington University.

And what about people who were not using cellphones? They were much less likely to overlook the clown.

Hyman said the study shows that people shouldn't be talking on their cellphone while driving.
