Dale A. Bates Electrical Engineer
Dale A. Bates, 74, a retired electrical engineer who worked for a Silver Spring defense contracting company, died Oct. 9 of liver disease at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. He lived in Poolesville.
Mr. Bates came to the Washington region in 1972 and spent 22 years with the old Vitro Corp., where he worked on missile modeling and simulation during the development of missiles for the Navy. He later worked with several other engineering firms before spending five years at the Boeing Co. before retiring in 2004.
Dale Arden Bates was born in El Dorado, Ark., and served in the Navy in the 1950s. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University and worked with a division of the Chrysler Corp. in Slidell, La., where he was involved in building booster rockets for the space program.
He worked with Lockheed in Marietta, Ga., from 1965 to 1972, developing computer elements of the C-5A military cargo aircraft.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Zannie Emanus Bates of Poolesville; three children, Chandra McCall of Poolesville, Barry Bates of Martinsburg, W.Va., and DeeAnn Patrick of Lawrenceville, Ga.; four brothers; two sisters; and six grandchildren.

Murray Altmann Federal Reserve Board Official
Murray Altmann, 85, an economist who retired in 1983 from the Federal Reserve System as an assistant to the Board of Governors, died Oct. 24 at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He had complications following abdominal surgery.
Mr. Altmann began his Federal Reserve career in 1949 in the research and statistics division. Over the years, he did economic advisory work for the United Nations and the Central Bank of Tanzania.
Mr. Altmann, a Rockville resident, was a New York native and an Army veteran of World War II. He graduated in 1947 from Pennsylvania State University, where he received a master's degree in economics in 1949.
In the early 1990s, he did volunteer work at Rockville schools and the public library.
His marriage to Paula Bischoff Altmann ended in divorce.
Survivors include two sons, Micah Altmann of Catonsville, Md., and Eben Altmann of Rockville; a sister, Ruth Altmann of Kensington; and a granddaughter.
