Car goes into canal; no serious injuries

A car carrying five people plunged into the C&O canal about 10 p.m. Friday near Fletcher's Boat House, D.C. police said.

A police spokesman said all five had been accounted for by 11. No serious injuries were reported. A D.C. fire department spokesman said the car apparently was driving on the canal towpath.

Man gets 20 years in girlfriend's killing

A Prince William County man who admitted killing his ex-girlfriend near her Vienna home last year was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison.

Sayed Hashemi, a used-car salesman who also went by the name Ehsan Amin, pleaded guilty in June to fatally stabbing Homaira Rahman, 25, who was well-known in the Afghan American community.
